On February 11th, the Mirror Visions Ensemble Facebook posted a wonderful video of their director, tenor Scott Murphree, performing Chris Berg’s “Lettre de Regret (excerpt from Chabrier’s letter to his son)” with Chris at the piano.
We can see here the rapture and intelligence of Berg’s ‘piano-playing face,’ which so often signaled a special very concentrated engagement mingled with lightness and drama as he attended to the intelligence of the score and performer alike — a very relieving sight to see again at this time!
Emmanuel Chabrier (1841–1894) was a renowned French Romantic composer whose work is described as having precisely the qualitites that attracted Berg’s taste: ‘rhythmic verve,’ ‘orchestral invention,’ ‘exuberance,’ ‘unusual poignancy’: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuel_Chabrier
We’ll continue documenting Christopher Berg’s relationships with this composer and his context and with Mirror Visions Ensemble in future posts.
